About the wreck

The Moonlight was a schooner that sank in Lake Superior off the coast of Michigan Island. The wreckage site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Diving & visiting

The wreck of Moonlight was discovered in 2004 by shipwreck hunters Ken Merryman and Jerry Eliason near Michigan Island in Lake Superior. It lies in approximately 240 feet (73 m) of water, about seven miles (11 km) east of the island. The vessel likely broke apart near the surface as it sank, with sections of the hull separating before reaching the lakebed. Large portions of the wooden hull nevertheless survive, along with machinery and numerous artifacts, including the donkey boiler and engine, steam-powered windlass, anchors, ceramics, bottles, rudder, and the ship's wheel and steering mechanism. The vessel's name remains visible on one of its anchors.

The wreck's remote location and depth have limited diver visitation, leaving much of the site relatively undisturbed.
